How the composite works

We map each identity you pick to a hostility metric and combine the scores. In "Worst case for me" mode the map shows the single highest hostility category for your picks, which is the right default if any one of them could put you at risk. In "Average" mode the map shows the average across your picks.

Where am I safest? An intersectional lens

Tick every identity that applies to you. The map recolors for your combined situation, and the country cards explain which dimension drives the score. A gay interracial couple, for example, might pick LGBTQ+, Asian, and interracial relationship all at once.

How the composite works

When you tick 2 identities, we map each one to a hostility metric and combine the scores. In Worst case for me mode the map shows the single highest hostility category for your picks, which is the right default if any one of them could put you at risk. In Average mode the map shows the average across your picks. Country cards show the “main reason” behind the number so you can tell whether a warning comes from, say, anti-LGBTQ+ law or anti-migrant rhetoric.

If you see “insufficient” for a country, that means at least one of your selected dimensions has no recorded data there, and the worst-case composite can’t be computed honestly. That silence is itself a signal. Switching to Average mode will use whatever dimensions do have data.
